Depression Test - Depression Symptoms & Signs

Depression Symptoms and Signs

Depression is simply a response to too much or too little mental stimulus. Whilst many people can and do make a swift recovery without treatment, often depression can lurk in the shadows if it is left unchecked.

Common symptoms of depression are that you may feel hopeless and sad or stop feeling pleasure from almost everything. You may also feel empty or discouraged. The symptoms and signs of depression are often subtle at first. Often it’s hard to recognize that your different symptoms may be connected and that you might have depression.

Below is a list of common symptoms and signs of depression:

  • Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in or ability to enjoy former social activities or hobbies.
  • Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook - you feel nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
  • Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping (hypersomnia).
  • Appetite or weight changes. A change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
  • Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued and physically drained. Even the smallest tasks are exhausting or take longer.
  • Psychomotor retardation or agitation. Either feeling “keyed up” and restless or sluggish and physically slowed down.
  • Concentration problems. Trouble remembering things, focusing or making decisions.
  • Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
